Mel Raine sighed happily, stroking a horse she didn‘t know. She really hoped the owner wouldn‘t be mad. The horse looked lonely, and Mel was one to do it in one look. ” Hey there, boy. How is it goin‘?” She asked. He looked at Mel, and his eyes looked happy from the attention. She don’t know how anyone couldn’t give in by just a look to his face, so sweet and spirited, it looked. He pushed Mel’s elbow, which was perched on the door of his stall. She smiled, and stroked his neck with gently with her other hand, and he leaned his large head down, seeming to enjoy it. Mel smiled, he was handsome, that was for sure. He seemed to like the attention, and Mel hoped he got enough, because if he didn’t then she would be here every day. He seemed like a good friend to make.
She thought of Ty, him and his dappled body running in the fields here at this really nice stable. He could have friends like the one she was petting. He would like it here, Mel thought. He liked any place with horses and people to whinny at. He would love it here, just like Mel was starting to. Of course, if she got killed by the owner of this horse then she wouldn’t like it as much. But she would still love it and just avoid that person. Ty would like it here, she kept telling herself. It was the truth, she knew, but she was always worried about where she put him and what to do with him. Of course it had to be hard for him, but after a while, and knowing him is was a short one, he would fit in and love it here. He had to.
At that moment, though, Mel really wanted a human friend. Someone she could talk to easily. Not that Ty, my horse that I was trying to register in the stables, wasn’t enough. She just would have liked a human friend to talk to about her frustrating life. She had plenty to say, that’s for sure. Mel pet the open spot between his nostrils, and leaned back as he put his head up. He pushed her arm, wanting more pets and attention. Mel laughed and started to pet his neck, stroking gently. Finally she patted the horse and said. ”You just might like Ty. He is my horse, I am trying to register him here.” She explained. Sure, it was a little weird to talk to the horses, but they were always there to listen, and wanting attention no doubt. So it couldn’t be that bad. She shrugged it off, “I wonder who owns you, because whoever does needs to run me out of here before I start to really like you.” She laughed a little, happy to be stroking a horse. She sighed, she didn’t want to leave, she could sit there all day. She sat there, leaning on the door and petting him, deliberating.

Trigger looked at a girl longingly. When she finally came over to peet him he got happy. His girl wasnt here yet and he was bored. As the girl began to pet and talk to him he nudged her elbow. Most of the time she talked to him he kept one ear forward constantly listening to her. He was good at listening. He always listened to his girl. He was quite easy to stirke up a conversation with. When the girl pet him between the nostrals he lowered his head and snorted. It had tickled his nose. But he still nudged her wanting all the loves he could get.
I walked into the barn with Harley, my border collie, at my side. I smiled seeing Trigger had made a new friend. I shook my head. walking up to the girl I smiled. Hello, I said. Harley walked up to the girl and sniffed her. Im Charlie this is my horse Trigger, I said motioning to the horse she was petting. Trigger nickered to me and tossed his head playfully. Big teddy bear isnt he, I smiled stroking Triggers face. Harley nudged the girls hand wanting love too. I chuckled at the dog. And this is Harley, I shook my head as the dog wagged his tail and looked to the girl with his golden eyes.

Mel was startled when a girl came up behind her. "Oh, sorry about that. He is a wonderful horse." she complimented, happy to actually meet a human. When she said he was a big teddy bear, she smiled. ”Yes, he really is. He is like my horse in a way.” Mel smiled again, think of Ty. She really did miss him, even though it had only been yesterday that she saw him. ”It’s nice to meet you, Charlie.” Mel said, ”I’m Melanie James. New to the stables. You can call me Mel Raine or Mel.” she said. Then she laughed, looking down at the attention-seeking collie. She bent down, so that she was only about a head taller than Harley. She tousled with the soft fur, being gentle. ”Well aren’t you a cutie.” She said, laughing at the happy-go-lucky dog.
Then she stood up, ”Sorry about not asking you. He was looking for attention, it seemed.” she smiled at Trigger, ”He seemed to want some company as much as I did.” she joked, and she smiled once again. ”I am registering my horse, Tyler.” Mel then explained, ”I decided I probably needed to get to know the stable, I just hope they let him stay.” She smiled, she wasn’t really worried. Ty was a good-tempered horse, he wasn’t a nuisance at all.
Mel smiled down at Harley, ”I had no idea you could bring your dog! I’ll have to bring April.” She thought of the small Cavalier King Charles. Her just next to Ty was comical, around all these dogs, it would be hilarious. She laughed, thinking of it. ”She is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.” she said, explaining her laughter.

I listened to the girls words. It ok I dont mind you petting him, I answered. His favorite treat is green apples if you ever want to feed him, I added. Harley loved the attention he just recieved. He was still wagging his tail even after they girl had ruffled his fur. I looked back to the girl gently stroking Harleys head. Ya I bring Harley all the time, I answered. I looked to Trigger and stroked his face once again. What kind of horse do you have? I asked interested. Triggers a Quarter Horse, I informed her. This girl seemed real nice. I could tell she wanted to make friends. But that was ok I was willing to help.
Once the girl told me here horses breed I smiled. Would you like to go for a ride? I asked her. Theres great trails around here, I added. I stopped stroking harley head and placed my hand in my pocket pulling out an apple treat for Trigger. The horse munched on it quickly then looked for more. I stroked his face again but the horse continued to look for more treats. He was a pig when it came to treats

Mel sighed in relief, she was happy Charlie didn’t mind her petting her horse. She laughed when she said that Trigger loved green apples, and when he munched it down it was funny. Mel looked down at Harley again and pet his head, smiling at his wagging tail. He loved the attention, that was for certain. ”I thought he was,” she said, referring to Trigger being a Quarter Horse. ”Tyler is a Thoroughbred, he’s about three years now. Had him since he was just a colt.” I said, smiling. I loved Ty, he meant a lot to me. He was my best friend, and he was great to ride on. It didn't matter to him whether we trail rode or jumped, he just wanted the attention and the ride. He loved it just as much as Mel did.
This girl seemed like a good friend to make. She was nice, and she loved horses obviously. ”I’m sure they do,” Mel said, thinking of the forest of trees. ”I can’t go though, not yet anyway. Ty still has to be accepted at the registry, but I would definitely love to when he can.” She smiled, she really wanted the feeling of the wind in her hair, the smell of the forest. It sounded like a lot of fun.

I felt bad about her not being able to ride but I was happy to hear that her hohrse was a thoroughbred. My cousins horse Fallen Interlude is a thoroughbred, I said happily. I motioned for her to follow me. I took her to Interludes stall. Interlude poked his head out of his stall recongnizing me. This is Fallen Interlude hes a thoroughbred, I said. I stroked the dark bay horses head. Hes a sweet guy to, I added. My cousin does jumping events, I said. Fallen nudged Mels hand looking for treats. He knew Trigger got one and he wanted one too.
Hes a great horse only rode him once and thats when Ian led me around on him, I chuckled. Ian was in the middle of lunging Fallen and I had come in and rode Fallen in a circle. So how long have you been here? I asked Mel. She seemed like a sweet girl. I would love getting to know her in the future. I walked back over to Trigger stall and sat on a bale of straw that was next to his stall.

When Charlie told her that her cousin also had a Thoroughbred, Mel smiled big. She loved Thoroughbreds, obviously. Jumping was her thing, she loved everything about it. When they went to the gorgeous horses’ stall, she couldn’t believe the beauty. It was a bay, and it was beautiful. She smiled, and got to pet him once before Charlie led her back to Triggers’ stall. When Charlie sat down, Mel really hoped it was OK for her to sit down next to her, because she did. The bundle of straw was something she usually did sit on, she was at Tys’ stable all the time. She practically lived there, she was there so much.
When Charlie asked her how long she had been there, Mel smiled. Charlie seemed like someone fun to get to know. She seemed nice and seemed to love horses just as much as Mel did. ”I haven’t been here long at all. Only about, oh, I’d say half a week?” she nodded, pretty sure she had been. Then she smiled wider, and jumped barely in excitement. “I can’t wait ‘til I can get Ty here. I think he would love it. It is a lot nicer than the one he is at now. I didn’t have enough money to put him in a better place.” Mel explained. She hated how she couldn’t, but her living on her own made it hard to take care of Tyler. She loved him to bits, though, so she could never get rid of him. "So how long have you and Trigger been here?" Mel asked, deciding to start a conversation.

I listened to Mel talk. I smiled. She seemed like a great girl. I was glad I had met her. She needed friends and so did I. She had the same intrests in horses as I did. I smiled once again as she sat next to me. Your horse seems to be really nice I cant wait to meet him and your dog, I added. I looked up at Trigger who was ease dropping on our conversation.
Ty seems like a cool name for a horse, I said. Its different, I added. I could wait till we could go on rides together. The trails would be fun and I could show her my spot by the lake. Maybe we could even do an over night trail too. Hey maybe one time we can get a group together and go camping on the trai, I suggested.

Mel smiled big, “That would be awesome, I love to hike and camp. It is really fun.” She was so happy to find that they had a lot in common, it would make making friends easier. “Ty really is great. He is a dapple grey, about 17 hands. He is a big boy. But his real name is King of Aces, my mom named him. I liked Tyler best for him though, so I call him that. I figure if he is my horse then I could call him whatever I wanted.” I laughed, shaking my head at what I had thought when I was a stubborn little kid.
“April is a little sweetheart. She loves watching the horses, and the only thing she is bad at is she likes to run betweens their legs. She only does that to Tyler though, since she knows him.” Mel explained, smiling at the thought of her sweet little dog. “She really is something, I have to admit.” Mel laughed, shaking her head. She looked at Harley, and started to pet his neck, gentle. She knew that April loved to get scratched between the ears. She did it now, hoping that Harley also liked it.

I smiled. Her horse really seemed like a great horse. I like thoroughbreds myself but I never got one. Trigger has been my companion since I was 16, I explained. He was given to me by a good friend who couldnt take care of him anymore, I added. I watched as she pet Harley. The dog loved the attention. He closed his eyes as if to say aww that feels good. I shook my head at the dog. I looked back to the horses. They too were watching us. So did your parents own a stables? I asked. I wondered if she was raised in a racing stable. I thought this girl was really fun. I thought we'd hit it off really good.
I just grew up on a few acres of land with a small amount of horses including Trigger, I said. It was fun running around on the land, I added. When I was younger I always use to follow the small herd of horses we had. I felt like I was part of them in some way. My mother always said I was a horse whisperer but I never really paid attention.

Mel smiled as Harley liked the attention, and she smiled wider when Charlie said that she had Trigger for a while. But she almost laughed when Charlie asked if she grew up in a stables. “No, not at all. My mom was a vet assistant.” she smiled, and thought of the one she called Mom. What a mom she was. Getting pregnant at age fourteen with her father who was four years older, eighteen. She would love to tell someone about her past, but she preferred to get to know the person before she told them her past. She thought that was reasonable. “My father was a dog breeder. But I grew up with my grandma, and she took good care of me. She got me Tyler, and Mom thought she was important enough to name him.” I laughed a little harshly, shaking my head. “Of course I decided that that wasn’t a good name for him, so I changed it.” I laughed again, more freely now.
“Grandma knew I loved horses. I loved them since I was a little kid. I don’t know how I started, I guess it was when I was about eight when I saw the movie Spirit-Stallion of the Cimarron.” I laughed at the though. “And then I got to be in riding lessons, thanks to my grandma. And it went on from there. I spent all my time at the stables, until they closed due to lack of riders and money. But that didn’t stop me. I kept going…I couldn’t ever give up on my dream.” I said this all looking at the honey eyes of Harley. They calmed me, and stroking his brown fur made me feel even better.

I listened to Mel. It seemed like she had a really nice grandmother to do all those things. Harley loved the attention he was still getting. I was given Trigger by a friend when I was 16 and learned how to ride myself, I said. I reached out and stroked Harleys head. Trigger nickered to me wanting attention too. I reached up and stroked the horses nose. Well I cant wait to go riding with you, I said looking back to Mel. And I cant wait to meet Ty, I added.
I looked to Trigger and then back to Mel. Im suppose to get a new horse today maybe you can help me unload him, I said. I knew Mel could have her horse here yet but she could help me with mine. After we get him then maybe you can help me groom him, I added. Just then a trailer pulled up. Hey look hes here, I said. I stood and walked out to the truck. The Rock was unloaded and I was amazed at the beauty of the horse. He was huge too. Wow Ian didnt say anything about it being a Shire horse, I said. I took the lead rope from the man. Hey mel can you get his tack for me, I said. I stroked Rocks face. The giant horse nuged me gently. Well Hello, I said to him. He was big and I couldnt wait to get started with my new horse. Mel smiled as Charlie didn't stress on the fact about her parents. She wasn't nosey, and Mel really liked that. She hated when everyone wanted to know her business. She thought it was really rude. And that made her like Charlie even more. She was open, kind, and she wasn't nosey. That was great. When Mel heard her talk about her new horse, she was really excited. "That's great!" she said right before Charlie jumped up to the sound of the trailer.
Mel went out after her, excited to see the horse. When the massive horse was put in Charlies' hands, Mels' eyes widened. She had never seen such a huge horse. "I see how he is called The Rock." She joked, then taking the tack from the other man. She nodded, holding the tack in a way to make sure it didn't fall. She watched the kind horse, and saw his affection to Charlie right away. It was cute. "He is a magnificent horse." she admitted, but no horse, to her, could be nearly as beautiful as her Tyler. The Rock really was large, and he had muscles that probably felt like just that. She smiled, and waited for Charlie to lead her to the direction of the stable. Wordcount- 221

I chuckled at Mels joke about the horses name. when Mel had his tack I led both Rock and Mel back inside. The tack can go in there, I directed Mel to the tack room. As she was putting the tack away I led Rock to the crossties. Getting him all setted I went and grabbed my grooming kit and started to groom Rock. Come help me Mel, I said as she came out of the tack room. Hes really gentle for being so big, I said as I started at the Rocks shoulder. Rock liked the feeling of the brush on his coat and whinnied to the other horses. Trigger poked his head out and whinnied back. Looks like Trigger and Rock are already friends, I smiled to my small palomino.
Rock turned his head and looked to me. I smiled and stroked the large horses face. Rock could tell right away who the owner was but liked the attention from both girls. He beautiful, I said as his black coat began to shine. Cant wait to ride him, I said. It was much to hot to ride right now but maybe late afternoon. They say you can ride triple on him so maybe when it cools off we can take him on the trail Mel, I said. I knew Mel would love that and so would The Rock. Rock was already liking it here. He was unloaded and went straight to being groomed and loved on, he was satisfied.

Mel smiled, she loved how Charlie thought she was a friend, and she was really happy to help. She smiled, and then her phone buzzed on vibrate in her pocket. She had made sure it was on vibrate, that way it didn't disturb any of the horses. She put it to her ear. "Hello?" She asked. She smiled hugely as the conversation went on. Finally she said, "That's great!" I said 'Thanks' before I hung up. Then I quickly pushed in the new number, and spoke into it. "Hey! It's Mel Raine here. I was wondering if you could do me a favor..." I smiled, and then smiled even bigger. "Thanks! I'll see you soon then!" Mel looked at Charlie then, and stroked The Rock gently, just to help her calm. But she couldn't help her enthusiasm at her next words, "Ty is coming! He is coming now, on a favor. They said they were just going to the stables, and he will be here in about five minutes!" Mel was so happy, she was estatic. Her smile only got bigger as she grabbed a brush, starting to untangle his short black hair.
Then she smiled at Charlie. "That means, after we get done with Rock here, then we can brush Ty and go on a ride!" I brushed for a sec, and then said, "Gosh, I am sooo excited! We can go on trail rides now, and everything!" Then she smiled big, and she almost knew the answer before she said it, "Whatcha think?" she asked, smiling huge.
