Evan Your my escape From this messed up place 'Cause you let me forget You numb my pain Evan had brought Highwire to the practice ring to do some practice on his gaits but Evan couldn't pay attention at all. He gave up after twenty minutes and brought Highwire back to the barn and headed home. After fretting around his house for nearly an hour, not believing what in the world he had just done, he finally calmed down enough to figure out what he was going to wear.
He thought he was pathetic, actually wanting to look his best for a girl. Where in his life did he have time for a girl? Make time He thought. He grabbed a pair of regular riding jeans out of his drawer and threw them on his bed. He looked through his shirt drawers, not satisfied with anything at all. He nearly laughed at himself for caring so much but he continued looking until he found a grey shirt with a cool square design.
He took a shower, the second one in less than twelve hours and styled his hair again to get it perfect again. He slipped the clear stud out of his lip and put it in a box with multiple other studs. He sifted through them until he found a silver one he liked. Slipping on his riding boots he grabbed his car keys and headed out the door.
At the barn he tacked Highwire silently, his hands a bit shaky. Highwire was on the alert as usual and several times Evan made sure the cross ties were properly hooked on in case Highwire tried to make a break for it like this morning. Evan pulled his iPod out of his pocket and checked the time, 12:55. He took Highwire out of the cross ties and let him outside the barn.
He mounted Highwire and began a smooth trot towards the trail. A million different thoughts trailed through his mind as he let the horse direct him which could end very badly but luckily Highwire managed to get them there with no real help from Evan at all. Evan gripped the reins tight as he waited for Blair. He was nervous, anxious, and confused all at once.

[glow=white,2,300]Blair[/glow] I'm gonna do the things that I wanna do. I ain't got a thing to prove to you. I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans. Excuse my manners if I make a scene.
Blair placed her hands on her hips, her hair messed up and soaked with sweat after her workout with Indie. She had been distracted, but she is dedicated to her work. Indie had guided her the entire time, knowing she was not one hundred percent concentrated. Now she was flipping through her clothes. She only had an hour. She pulled out a pair of red pair of skinny jeans, a white and black vintage t-shirt, and a red bandana scarf.
She took a quick shower and changed, so she wouldn't smell too much like Indie. Now she smelled more like honey. YAY! she smiled at herself in the mirror, even though her hair was wet. She dried it and fixed it to where it was slightly poofed at the top. She put on a little bit of eyeliner. She didn't look like a supermodel, but she looked better than she did forty-five minutes earlier. She tied her scarf around her neck and adjusted her hair again before pulling on her boots and leaving the house.
She was hoping she didn't sweat too much on the walk over. Man, she really wanted a car. When she finally came to Pinewood, she was already tired. The day was growing rather warm. She tied Indie up and groomed her a little, not using up much of her time, because she had already groomed the mare twice in less than two hours. She tacked her up and flipped open her cellphone. She was already five minutes late.
She forgot her helmet in her rush and hopped on Indie and cantered out of the barn. She finally saw Evan, sitting on Highwire at the entrance to the trail. She waved, and smiled, hoping to make up from her late entrance. She trotted up to him, and Indie let out a nicker of greeting. Blair smiled again and patted Indie's neck, pulling Indie to a stop. "Sorry I'm late."

Evan was running his hand through Highwires mane when Highwire lifted his head and whinnied. Evan turned and saw Blair coming up on Indie. At the sight of her he smiled and suddenly he wasn't really nervous anymore. He wasn't feeling all the feelings he had been before. It was kinda like he was floating.
"Nah it's ok" He said "I haven't been here that long anyways." Evan evened out Highwires mane where he had messed it up. He looked up again, her eyes catching his attention this time. Her dark eyes, nearly black actually stood out against her skin, very interesting. Evan looked down, now embarrassed he was staring. Yet he found himself looking up again.
"Ready?" He asked as Highwire stomped his foot down on the ground. Evan loosened his grip on the reins, realizing his knuckles were white where he had been gripping them so tight. He hoped she hadn't seen that. The wind blew through the trail raising the tree branches. At the sound of the wind Highwire pricked his ears forward and listened contently as if he could hear something. Even took a deep breath of pine tree scented air.
Memories hit him like a cinder block. All the years as a kid with his brother in the woods. The typical boy games of war and hide and seek. Then when they moved in with his foster parents they spent most their time outside riding the horses. As if it were happening before his eyes Evan could almost make out his brothers figure riding the little white horse down the path in front of them yelling for him to catch up. But suddenly the picture of his brother crumpled bloody body came before his eyes lids.
He nearly winced out loud and he had to look the opposite direction so Blair wouldn't see the hurt on his face. He hated it when he thought of things like that. He was gripping the reins again but this time his nails were digging into the material and it had left a mark. He rubbed it gently with his thumbs as he looked down, not able to look up. I'm making a fool of myself he thought to himself. Why did I do this? But he knew why he did the moment he looked up at Blair.

Blair smiled, relieved that she hadn't kept Evan waiting too long. She glanced down at his hands, barely noticing his white knuckles. Maybe he was as nervous as she was... She lifted up a hand to adjust her helmet. All she got was air. "God, I forgot my helmet." she sighed, dropping her hand back down to the reins resting on Indie's withers.
"Oh, well." she said, kicking Indie forward. She walked onto the trail and then stopped. "Come on! We're wasting daylight!" Indie trotted a little in place and looked around. Blair smiled at the anxious mare and patted her neck. She looked behind her to where Evan was sitting on his horse. He looked...
She felt her heart give a little bounce in her chest. She lifted a pale hand to fidget with a string that came loose from her scarf. She moved her feet around in the stirrups and played with a hole in her red sadde pad. She couldn't get it to go away. She'd never felt so... irritated in her life. But, she was irritated by herself. She was too quiet, too flawful. (sorry... I'm all mused out =/)

Evan forced a smile and kicked Highwire forward. He went with a jump. excited to be moving again and he nearly broke out into a run but Evan held him at a trot. He thought his face must have been pale enough to notice. He rubbed his hand across his forehead trying to make the thoughts and memories go away. It wasn't working.
He was trying hard to keep in focus with Highwire, but it was hard. He really wasn't paying attention, he was trying but he couldn't. He looked up at Blair, and felt ashamed that he was making this horrible for her. "Sorry" he said just over a whisper, he was staring at the navy blue saddle pad when he spoke. He was apologiving for how he was acting or acted. He wasn't sure. "It has nothing to do with you"
Highwire pranced, antsy to get going but Evan didn't really feel like running or anything. Evan looked straight ahead, he was pretty sure the pain was written all over his face, the fright of actually liking someone because they would leave him too. He most of all felt ashamed that he was like this, like he couldn't do anything because of his past. He sighed then looked up.
"So..." He said, trying to sound at least half normal in his tone, trying to start conversation. He looked up at Blair, now concentrating on being in reality, not living in the past. No matter how much he tried, hurt, wished, or cried his brother was never coming back and it was his fault.
Evan loosened his grip on the reins as he waited to see if she had any idea for conversation. He couldn't believe that he was so out of it. He didn't want to be yet he just...was. He closed his eyes and hated to ask it but he had to, "So why are you at Pinewood?" He hated talking about why he was here but yet something in himself told him he could trust her, he could tell her things. But maybe he was making a mistake...

Blair glanced over at Highwire, slightly uneasy with the way the pretty gelding was acting. She glanced down at Indie to make sure she was okay with it. The old mare seemed bored, her head down and her gait relaxed and slow. Like she really cared about the horse next to her.
Blair looked over at Evan. He seemed unnerved. Maybe troubled. She couldn't quite tell. She could tell he was hurting. A part of her wanted to reach out to him, to comfort him. But she didn't. To tell the truth, she was afraid. She was simply afraid of what he might think of Blair. The real Blair. Not the kind, friendly, dimpled Blair he knew. The frustrated, lonely, bipolar Blair.
She'd been taking her medicine for over three years. She swore she was better. And then it happened. One whole week she had given up. She just decided not to take the little red pills anymore. She threw a month's worth in the trash. She didn't tell her foster parents about it, either. She had run away, anywhere. She'd taken Indie with her.
She remembered sleeping on the sidewalk next to a homeless woman who was begging for change, and then the next night in a dirty old motel that smelled like rotten bananas. She blinked, trying to erase the memory. It didn't go away. The smell filled her nostrils again.
She was jolted back to reality when Evan asked her a question. What was it? Oh yeah, that's right. she thought, reassembling her thoughts. "My parents died in a car accident. I grew up in London. At first they sent me to Liverpool, but they ended up sending me here. They said London was too dangerous for a five year old who was alone. I live with the same foster parents I did eleven years ago, in Bella Vista. I needed a place to board Indie, so I came here."
She didn't know why she told him that. She had a gut feeling. She hated when she did that. But, she felt she could confide in him. It puzzled her.

Evan was uneasy as he waited for Blair to speak. He felt uncomfortable. What would make him think that she would want him? He's just 'that' kid. He's the one thats been hurt and is afraid to be hurt again. He's just the one who won't speak to you unless he has to. He's the one who's fucked up, plain and simple.
He listened as Blair spoke of her past. She hadn't asked why he was there yet which he was glad, he let out a breath and looked up. "I'm sorry about your parents" He said trying to keep calm "I know how it feels to lose someone close to you" He barely managed to choke out the words because it brought him back to that night and his brother. His brother dying in his arms. The night he lost part of himself.
Evan didn't let himself get lost in the memory again. He knew it all to well in his head. He patted Highwires neck instinctively out of habit. Highwire had been his escape over the last year of which he barely had made it. He shifted in his saddle carefully. How was he supposed to tell her that his actions caused his brother to be killed and he himself had almost committed suicide that night but had not succeeded.
He couldn't. Thats how. He wasn't ready to tel anyone about all that. He might be able to say some things gravely but he and never spoke of his brother before, not even to the councilor. And before he could think he was talking, "Maybe you shouldn't get to close to me, as friends I mean. I'm afraid to actually like someone like I do you. I've been hurt I'm afraid of loosing people and I've been hurt before and I can't believe I just said all that" He trailed off "Holy shit" he mumbled under his breath, not daring to look up now, he probably scared her.

Blair had been flipping her reins back and forth, from Indie's left shoulder to her right. She was relieved to hear that he knew how she felt. It was nice to know someone who was like her. She had always thought of herself as weird.
She squirmed in her saddle a little in the silence as they walked. She didn't like silence. Silence scared her. Alot. She had always been afraid of being alone. In the dark. In the silence. She suspected it was because of the crash. It had rendered her unconsious for a few minutes, definately not long. But still... the silence and darkness still gave her nightmares.
Blair looked at Evan when he began to speak. Her eyes may have grew just a little wider, but she didn't notice. She couldn't keep the smile from her face when he finished. She looked between Indie's ears, at her shoulder, at the tip of her boots, anywhere but his face. Because her cheeks were pink and the corners of her lips were curled up slightly.
She stopped in a small clearing and pulled her feet out of the stirrups. "I can't believe you just said that, either." she mumbled quietly. "But I'm glad you did."

Evan was prepared to cringe as she spoke, afraid of what she was going to say but what she said totally took him off guard. When she said she couldn't believe he'd said it he couldn't help but smile a little. He didn't know why he did it either but he did. But what really dumbfounded her was that she was glad he did. "Glad?" He asked, surprised.
When she stopped so did Evan and as she pulled his feet out she did the same. Highwire reacted by snorting in protest, taking it as a sign of stopping and not moving more but he stayed put. He'd had his fun for the day...hopefully.
Carefully Evan dismounted Highwire, the gelding took a step forward to see if he could go but Evan held a grip on his reins. "Not this time Buddy" He said to the gelding. "So what'd you mean by 'glad'?" He asked her as he smiled curiously, now more relaxed than before.
OOC://No muse right now sorry

Blair couldn't help but smile as she slid off of Indie. The horse didn't flinch. She dropped the reins, still smiling. This time she dared to look at the strange guy she had met a few hours before. She stepped toward him, happy that he was happy.
As she rolled up her stirrups she let the moment bubble and boil. She was enjoying it. She was really happy he was relaxing some. She almost hated tension as much as she hated silence. Almost as much. She looked him up and down. This was the first time she had seen him fully, without being frustrated. The way he smiled turned her insides into jelly.
She returned his curious smile. His question took her by suprise, though. He was almost too good. She shrugged. "Just glad. Why do you want to know?" Indie was snoring quietly. If you think about it, it really ruined the moment, but Blair didn't really care. (no problem. I'm short of muse at the moment, too.)

Evan smiled and had to chuckle when she asked him what he wanted to know because he didn't even know. "I don't know" He said as he flipped the reins over Highwires head and gripped them in his hand "Just curious" He turned his back to her as he rolled his stirrups. Highwire let out a loud half snort that Evan took as him being annoyed.
He hated the way he could be so up and then so down just by thinking of one little thing. Just one little thing could ruin his day. His day would be way past ruined if he hadn't been spending it with Blair. She some how just took his mind off things and he couldn't stay in a bad mood around her. He supposed that that was a good thing.
Highwire stepped forward to graze but was cut short by his reins in Evan's hand. He stared at the gelding intently and put the reins back over his head. It was a habit he had of just letting Highwire graze an most the time he did ok with it. "Sir help me god if you run..." He halfheartedly threatened his horse, nothing serious. No matter how long or far Highwire ran he always came back to Evan. It was something with the horse and rider bond.
Highwire stayed right next to Evan's watchful eye, picking at the sparse grass he could. Evan watched the horse, he knew what he was capable of and was half expecting it out of the horse. Evan looked back at Blair, keeping close to Highwire even though the horse barely moved.

Blair smiled and watched while Evan rolled up his stirrups and allowed Highwire to graze. She allowed herself to think out loud. "Evan." she said, half in her mind and half focused on the ground. "That's an awesome name. Blair just sounds all... haunted."
She walked over to a tree next the Evan's big black gelding. She sat down at the base of the tree. She patted the ground next to her and loosend up her bandana. The strange girl pulled her knees up, resting her arms on them. She glanced up into the sky. The leaves were making a pretty pattern against the puffy white clouds and baby blue backdrop. She smiled for no apparent reason.
It felt good to be here. To be... carefree and happy. It felt good to be near Evan. "This is nice. It's beautiful out here." She could smell rain coming, but didn't say anything. They would probably make it back before the rain. Now that she thought about it, the rain would be nice. It had been rather dry lately...

Evan laughed at her comment about his name as he took a seat next to her. "Blair doesn't sound haunted but it reminds e of the Witch trials so I guess you could call it haunted. Haunted but unique. I've never met anyone with the name Blair" He was rambling but he didn't care, he wasn't thinking straight. His back was against the tree trunk lightly and Blair was right next to him, all was good.
Evan crossed his legs Indian style and rested his chin in his hand. Through the light covering of hair that had now fallen into his face, Evan peered at the sky, the blue and white against the green pine tree horizon. This is very nice he said as he smiled. It was a crooked smile, a content smile. He felt at peace here. He took his eyes off the sky and looked at Blair.
She sat staring at the sky and Evan was looking at her. He was still smiling, for whatever reason, he couldn't really remember. He'd only met her just this morning and he was already comfortable around her. Hell, he wasn't even comfortable around his foster parents and he'd lived with them the past five or six years of his life, give or take a few years.
Today was turning out strange for Evan but strange in a good way. He leaned back against the tree and stretched out his legs. He laced his fingers together and placed them behind his head. Closing his eyes he took in a deep breath. He was happy. It felt good to feel like that, he hadn't felt the feeling for a really long time and it felt good.

Blair sighed contentedly, glancing at her horse. Indie was picking at some grass, clearly bored and sleepy. She frowned inwardly, but kept her happy face on. It was sad to think that Indie would be gone soon, or at least retired. Blair couldn't help thinking about what she would do if Indie became sick. Would she be forced to put the old mare down? She just hoped that Indie would die peacefully, of old age or something.
Blair was always uneasy when it came to making difficult decisions. She was never good at it. She always seemed to make the wrong choice. It was like whatever she did, she always screwed up things. Maybe this time, she would end up doing something right. Maybe she wouldn't screw up.
It was time for her to be bold. It was time for her to be... outgoing. She would no longer be the sad, lonely, quiet Blair she had been for eleven years. She would be the new, bold, outrageous Blair. It was time for her to take chances. With pink cheeks, and a wildly thumping heart, she took a deep breath turned her head toward Evan.
"What would you say if I asked you if you liked me?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Indie looked up suddenly, but Blair didn't notice. She was completely focused on Evan's face. She awaited his answer nervously.

Evan watched Highwire as he grazed peacefully and silently, acting like a sane horse. His black hide was sleek looking from being brushed. His mane up in a braid that needed to be redone, Evan wasn't all that good at it. He looked over at Indie, a black warmblood just like Highwire, except Highwire was 17hh Indie was only around 15.2 or 15.3 Evan was guessing.
As if he knew what Evan was thinking, Highwire brought his head up, some grass sticking to his mouth and looked around. He first looked at Evan adn Blair and then t Indie but eventually went back to grazing. Evan didn't know what he would have done without Highwire. When Evan had first arrived at his new home with his foster parents at age eleven, Highwire was barely a year old.
Evan remembered he used to spend all his time with the young horse, he loved him. He also earned many cuts, bruises, and scars from being around the feisty horse. Yet Evan didn't care, Highwire had always been his. He wasn't to sure he where he would be without Highwire, the horse who made it so easy to get angry with but the horse you could love with all your heart. Evan was surprised at first when he heard Blair shifting and when he looked at her she was looking at him.
Her eyes were intent, focused and so Evan held her gaze, as she spoke though, his heart began beating faster. His hands were still behind his head, his legs still stretched out so he pulled them up so he was half sitting on his knees. He turned his body towards her and put his hands in his lap. "I only met you what?three or four hours ago?" He started, he sounded doubtful to himself. "and yet I've been able to talk to you. I never talk to anyone, not even my foster parents. I feel happy and comfortable around you." He took in a breath "So I guess I'd say yes"
