Marie was dripping with sweat, it was burning her eyes. The usual 20 degree weather had suddenly vanished and was now an odd overcasted 65 degrees. It was thundering off in the distance and it was almost relaxing. Even her off the track thoroughbred thought so, never being afraid of anything, sadly.
Marie was pushing for a pirouette and Donte was growing frustrated. He paused half way threw the canter pirouette and reared slightly, then higher before letting rip with a buck, then grabbed the bit, who knows how, well Marie did, she had let her reins go a little bit to try and get him out of the rearing and into a forward movement before he decided to rear too far up and go over on her.
Well, she got the forward, with a few added bucks. He took off running, leaping and jumping into the air, whipping and twisting his body around like a sling shot. Marie reached for the reins, terrified but used to these episodes. She grabbed a good hold of her left rein and pulled him into a 20 meter circle. Still going at a canter. She did a lot of extended canters with him, since he wanted to be a brat.
Then she went down the centerline, halted, Cantered from the halt, well walked then cantered. She did five five tempi's and then moved him into a nice forward trot. She took him across the diagonal at a sitting trot, tapping his haunches to stay to the outside. She switched her whip and then took him down the diagonal again, this time pushing him out into an extended trot, lifting in the front and popping his legs high up till it looked like he was climbing a mountain.
She slowed him down in the corners and then asked for a lengthen the next time. She pat his neck with her inside rein and then paused her seat and asked for a walk. "Walk, ho, walk buddy," she said. He slowed and then popped himself into a slow trot. She squeezed with her calves, asking for a quicker trot. He ignored it and she gave him a big kick with her spurs slightly turned in, enough to touch him, but more for him to know she could use them if he ignored her. He ignored her and she tapped him with the whip. He bellowed and picked up the quick walk she was looking for. She then slowly softened his mouth at the bit, letting him feel it, and feeling him. She continued till she felt him trying to get more bit and then slowly fed the reins to him till he was almost dragging his head on the ground.
Marie held the buckle of the reins in her left hand and leaned back in the saddle, asking for a faster walk still. He complied and walked quicker. Marie scratched his withers with her inside hand and then leaned back further to scratch his rump. "Good boy. Good warm up right?" she said. She smiled when the horse turned his head to look at her with a quizzical look. Almost a "I have no clue what you mean lady, I'm only a horse" kind of look. Marie only smiled and pat his withers. "Yes I know you have no idea what I'm saying, I just like to think you do," she said smiling. He pinned his ears and got a confused look on his face. He slowed down in the walk and she made him walk faster after she corrected his head again. He held it up more this time. "Pick your feet up, I don't want you-HHa!" she gasped as he stumbled, nearly falling on his knees but he caught himself quickly and sprinted into the trot, knowing he'd get a tap with the whip. He was correct too. She tapped him with the whip. "Use your butt buddy. I can't always hold you up," she said with a crooked grin on her face. He flicked his ears lazily at a fly and slowed into the walk again, on Marie's aids.
