The first time she met Derrick Alayna was in the USA for the Grand Prix, that year being held in Las Vegas. The Grand Prix was their last stop before the Olympics. Even though the Olympics were being held three years from then if you did well at a Grand Prix you were an automatic nomination for the next Olympic Equestrian team. Alayna had just finished practicing that day and had some friends convince her that she needed to relax and calm down. Going to a bar and having a few drinks wasnt exactly what Alayna had ever had in mind when it came to relaxing and having a good time but their was always a first time for anything. Alayna was in the bar, wearing a pair of blue jeans and a tight short tank top, which didnt make her the most slutty dressed person in the bar. Alayna was still very concerned about her scars and didnt want them to be seen. Finding some girls and dancing with them were easy, but there were some men that tried to ask her to dance. Each one of them was turned down, there was just no interest that Alayna had in them. But there was one guy that Alayna couldnt help but look at constently. He was rugged looking but Alayna didnt mind that at all, he was wearing worn looking boots and a pair of blue jeans. That was something Alayna admired. He didnt seem to be one of those guys that was a fake cowboy, he was a real cowboy. Alayna could tell by the way he walked and the way he was dressed. Alayna liked that part about him though. It was Derrick that came to her first, introduced himself and asked her to dance. Alayna did not mind telling him yes but it was slightly awkward at first. They danced, then sat down and had a few beers to talk pretty much about anything in the world. Then their horses came up, and Derrick promised to come to the Grand Prix so he could watch her ride. That was the best night Alayna had in a long time and she wasnt about to let that relationship end.
This had been the best year of Alaynas life. King and Alayna won the Grand Prix that day, and won some very many prestigious competitions in dressage and cross country, since the Grand Prix is mainly a show jumping competition. Now Alayna had something else to focus a great deal of her time on. Derrick. Everywhere he went Alayna was right there behind him trying to find a way for them to be together. Feelings between the two began to grow deeper and deeper until just the other day Alayna told him that she loved him. That was the three words that Alayna had been so scared to say. After what Shane had done to her there was really a lot of things that Alayna was scared to do. Falling in love was definetely one of those things even though it was something that she could not control. Derrick was the right man for her, he treated her right, called her beautiful and doted on her. And that was something that every woman wanted. And Alayna practically worshipped the ground the man walked on. Even though Alayna was so rich it was unbelievable she did not like to show it off much. That was probably the whole reason that Alayna still had so much money, she wouldnt really spend it unless it was to go see Derrick or on her horse. Alayna would spend every last dime to be able to see Derrick wherever he was. Though a great deal of her heart was ready to settle down and start a family. But she wasnt all that sure if Derrick felt the same way that she did. Her ten year old stallion was getting close to retirement, the olympics two years from now being his last competition. But Alayna would keep on travelling as long as it meant that Derrick was still with her. She would do anything possible to keep him with her. She loved him. That was what women did when they were in love.
Today wasnt exactly a big show but it was a big one in Pinewood Stables. King pranced in his stall as the hustle and bustle began to excite him. He always managed to get too antsy and unpredictable on show day. Well mainly only when Alayna was getting him ready. Once King was saddled and ready to go King was normally very well behaved. Alayna stepped into the barn carrying Kings special show tack and was greeted with a deep throated stallion whinny. King pawed at the stall door as Alayna sat everything down so she could tend to her horse. King stepped back but tossed his head impatiently. There were cross ties inside the stall so Alayna could groom him inside the stall without being bothered or startled by another other horses. Tying King to the cross ties with expert hands Alayna had the stallion groomed in minutes. His coat looking perfectly clean. Deciding not to braid his mane or tail Alayna moved to his legs. Wrapping Kings front legs in a special competition wrap and over that Alayna placed transport boots over all four legs. On days of a competition Alayna was especially careful. Picking up the show tack Alayna ran quickly and put it in the truck that was already hooked up to the trailer and ready to go. Cowboy sat in the passenger seat already feeling much better and healing from his heartworms. Moving back to her horse Alayna hooked on his stud chain and held him firmly in order to keep him from running a muck all the way to the trailer. King pranced alongside Alayna neighing happily. He was a large 18 hh horse, so it was no doubt that he looked magnificent. Alayna was proud of her beloved boy and she was looking forward to running in the show and hopefully having someone to give her a good kiss when she won.
Reaching the show grounds the hustle and bustle was slmost perfect for Alayna. She fit into everything so well it was almost intoxicating. Getting King out of the trailer and carrying Cowboy in the other arm they were in the show barn and getting ready to go. Alayna looked around impatiently for the man that she needed to be on the sidelines for her. But there was a text message on her phone telling her that he was going to be late. Alayna was always extra nervous during a show. Taking cowboy and tying his leash on a part of the grand stand Alayna let everyone know that they could play with him just as long as they stayed there and he didnt go near the horses. With big smiles on their faces Alayna watched for a few minutes as a few little girls began to play with the little aussie puppy. Going back to the stall Alayna had the stallion tacked in no time and herself dressed in the jumping suit that was required for the show. Mounting when her number was called Alayna looked up and smiled when she saw Derricks truck in the parking lot which meant that he was there, just hadnt been able to get to her. Only riders were allowed in the background. Trotting into the arena Alayna was greeted with a round of applause as she was introduced as a world champion rider here in their own Pinewood Stables. Thie course Alayna had been training King on for a week and there was a sharp turn that Alayna hoped the stallion would be able to make. He was so big that it was difficult for him to turn that sharp and straighten up enough for him to be able to successfully make the jump. Starting out they were all doing great, jumping perfectly. Then came that fateful turn that would change Alaynas life forever. King jumped and turned sharply but this time he could not collect himself enough. Alayna gasped when King slammed hard into the fence. The poles were supposed to fall when horses hit them but one only broke and slammed into the stallions chest. Luckily it barely missed his heart, went straight through his shouldar and entered Alaynas right shouldar. The horror of what happened so quickly was almost unbelievable. Everyone stared in horror as both horse and rider hit the ground hard. Alayna felt as if she couldnt breath, blood pouring out of her shouldar, mouth and nose. King was just laying there as if he knew that if he struggled he would only hurt Alayna more. The cries of pain coming from them both was almost unbearable. EMTs and Veterinarians immediately rushed to the scene, the vets tranquilizing the horse and the EMTs trying to work with Alayna to keep her stable. The only words that were coming out of Alaynas mouth were, Derrick, Derrick. The pole had broken but hald of it was sticking through Alayna, the other half still sticking through the stallion was they lay in the rubble of the jump.

Today had been a long day at work... a very long day. It was branding season, and that meant that all hands were on the ranch working all the time to get things done. There were a lot of cows on the ranch, and a lot of cows meant a lot of unbranded yearlings and calves, and a lot of unbranded animals meant a lot more work for the ranch hands to do. The beef industry had fallen a bit lately, and there had been a lot of lay offs in the past year, and Derrick was lucky to still have his job... but he supposed that considering he was only 20 and he was a very dedicated worker, his boss probably figured that he could count on Derrick to be a steady hand while he was around and not worry about him retiring on him any time soon.
Having fewer workers meant fewer people to do the work, and that meant that each man had more work to do than ever before. It was hot out, and all of the horses, men, and cattle were sweating and laboring hard. Derrick's ranch horse, Nevada, was drenched in sweat, his chestnut coat pretty well completely coated... and Derrick wasn't much better. They were all filthy, but it was just a part of the job. They were roping and wrestling cows down and seering the brand into their hides... it was definitely the dirty work on the ranch, but it was the sort of thing that Derrick liked to do. He didn't mind the dirt or the sweat.
He had sort of lost track of time, and when he suddenly realized that he only had about a half hour before Alayna was going to ride he muttered a few curse words under his breath, apologized to the other guys, promising he'd be back later, and headed out... of course taking care of the horse before he left. When he got home, he took a quick shower... considering showing up like he'd been to a horse show wouldn't exactly be proper, and got himself cleaned up and looking at least half way decent before heading for the show. He had promised Aly he'd be there and he intended to keep that promise. He came to as many of her shows as he possibly could, and he wasn't going to miss this one.
Derrick arrived just in time. Her name was being called over the loud speaker just as he arrived at the show ring. As usual, both she and King looked amazing. He'd made it habit to stand a bit back in the crowd so she wouldn't see him and get distracted, and that was exactly where he was now. He never really understood English riding, though he was sure if you were into that it was great for you. He'd put Johnny over a few downed logs and up countless banks, but never just for the fun of it. They were both workers at heart, and always did things for the sake of accomplishing a job... that was what they considered fun.
Everything seemed to be going quite well until King couldn't quite make a turn. A horrified silence filled the crowd as horse and rider went down on top of the jump, one of the rails shattering under the horse, and a good portion of it stabbing through the horse, and Aly. Derrick stood frozen for a moment, not sure that this had actually just happened or if it was just a horrible nightmare. By the time he could actually move again, they were already moving her to the ambulance, and he hastily moved to where she was being taken into the ambulance and took her hand in his, holding it tightly while doing his best to not look at the piece of lumber protruding through her shoulder.
You'll be alright. he said softly to her, though right now he wasn't so sure himself. He'd seen plenty of injuries, and had plenty of injuries himself, but nothing like this. It was definitely horrific and he wasn't sure what he would do if she didn't make it through it. Right now though, he knew she and King both needed him, and he wasn't going to go anywhere. He was a very level headed guy, and even though he was practically panicking inwardly, he was doing an excellent job of appearing calm and cool outwardly. Freaking out wouldn't help her... she just needed to hold on to something, and he was hoping to be that something.

That was the best night Alayna had in a long time and she wasnt about to let that relationship end.
Alaynas mind could not comprehend what was going on. The intense pain that was going through her body was almost unbearable. Alayna could feel King crushing her left leg, and there was probably going to be a few cracks in her pelvis from the way she was laying. Black spots, hazes and blurryness seemed to be the only thing inhabiting her at that moment. Kings weazing breath against her leg was the only thing keeping her consciounce. As long as she concentrated on the pain she would not die. Alayna knew that much. Suddenly people were swarming her and her horse. King immediately stiffened but did not move as someone gently put pressure on his head. As long as his head was down it would be very hard for him to get up. Alaynas helmet was taken off and someone was trying to talk to her, get her to speak. But the only words that were coming out of her mouth were Derrick, Derrick. Fear was coarsing through her veins and she could feel her stud shiver and shake on top of her. EMTs moved around her trying to asses what they could at that point. They knew they needed to at least cut off the piece that was sticking out of her back but it was going to be difficult. Blood flowed from her nose and a little from her mouth, Alayna growing very pale by the second. A brace was placed around her neck as many veterinarians prepared to heavily sedate her horse. King tried hard not to move as if he knew if he did he would do more harm to Alayna than good. Alayna to was given a sedative but she faught against it. She wanted to know what was going on, there was one person she needed to see before she would let it take ahold of her. Another rider came forward to help that knew the kind horse, taking a hold of the rope around his neck gently she pulled and tried to coax the stallion to his feet. King tensed and mustered every bit of strength that he could as if he knew that he would only get one shot. With great difficulty and with some help from other riders the stallion heaved and managed to push himself to his feet. But he was in great pain and could barely move.
As soon as the horse was off of Alayna a stretcher was brought out from a nearby ambulance. Alayna was lifted onto the stretcher and they began moving her out of the arena. Hazel eyes stared as her stallion looked after her, sadness and pain in his eyes and hers. As they exited the arena a familliar hand grabbed ahold of hers. Alayna knew those callused fingers, knew that voice. Derrick. Was all she managed to say as she was lifted into the ambulance. One of the EMTs told him to follow behind because there was no room. But before Derrick could leave the woman that had helped get King to his feet was standing behind him holding a squirning Cowboy. Im sorry are you Derrick? Alayna came with this puppy. You can take him to the hospital with you, they wouldnt care. Alayna had bought the puppy and affectionately named him Cowboy. To remind her everyday who it was that she was in love with. A roaming Cowboy. Alayna closed her eyes and began to drift into a deep sleep, though she knew she wasnt dead because she was still aware of her pain. The EMTs rushed her to the hospital as fast as they could, and got there in just the knick of time. Alayna was out cold and was loosing more blood by the second. The local doctor told the nurse that if this Derrick showed up to let him know that Alayna was going to be in surgery and he would see to Derrick when he was finished. Though he didnt have much hope for Alayna for living. Her shouldar was completely crushed and she would have a hard time regaining use of that arm, her leg was broken in three places and her knee looked horrible. Not to mention all the other minor, and major cuts and bruises that covered her body. Just more scars to add, but these were created by the world she loved.
---------------------------------------------
King watched as Alayna was being pushed away. Anger and pain seemed to envelope him, his beloved Alayna was being taken away from him. A trailer was placed inside the arena so King would not have to travel very far. The pole was sticking through the side of his chest and stuck out at the name of his neck. King struggled with every step as blood poured. He no longer had a bride on his head, obvious that the naval bone was also broken. A lead rope had been placed around his neck and the stallion was heavily sedated, he wasnt going anywhere. King bounced and struggled but soon he was inside the trailer. Not at all knowing where he was going nor where Alayna had gone. The poor thing did not understand what had happened to him, but he was immediately angry at himself for not making the jump. He felt as if he had let Alayna down for not doing what she had asked of him. he had seen how much pain Alayna was in and according to King it was all his fault. They were both in great pain because he could not make a simple jump. The large dark bay stallion stood in the trailer, snorting in pain everytime he had to lean or even move an inch on his right side. Everyone knew that this stallion was ruined. People had even talked about putting the stallion down right there in the arena. But the small town folk also knew how important the stallion was to Alayna. She would never allow him to be put down but spend every last dime she had just to make sure he would live out a long and happy life. If he would live King could at least be put up as a stud horse. His impecable breeding and amazing showing record owed him at least that much. No, they did not put him down, but here starts the long struggle in order to save him.
