♥ The sunshine after four days of rain did nothing to lift Abbey's spirits. She stood humming to herself, standing next to Saint in the big empty barn, running a curry over his amber coat, their breathing the only sound. It was Thursday morning, around eight o'clock and Abbey was about to take him out for their first ride together here at Pinewood. Starbuck being a jumpy little gelding when he so felt the need to be, had the possibility of making a scene today, which is why she'd drove up in the parking lot at seven A.M., determined to keep out of the public eye.
♥ West Virginia really was a small little state, hardly any activity. Back in Los Angeles, a party might just be wrapping up, drunks attempting to drive home and wrecking their cars into suburban front yards in the process. It was safer here, and the people were less brutal and fashion-obsessed, but it was also so much more boring. You wouldn't find a transvestite with a purple mohawk walking the street, or near as large a variety of cute guys here, which took away the fun of two of a sixteen-year-old girl's favorite pasttimes: people watching and flirting. Add in the fact that everyone here seemed to think they were a cowboy, and Abbey, a very modern, civilized girl and this seemed like a horrible place to have moved to.
♥ "Alright baby, time to work." The auburn-haired girl cackled in her horse's ears, smiling to herself, leading him out of his stall and to the round pens where they would warm up. The gelding was energetic today, picking his feet up high through the dew-covered grass, snorting, head lifted high, ears pricked toward the pasture. "Grass will come later, Saint." A quick stroke behind his ears, and she opened the gate, unbuckling his halter and allowing him to cross the pen at his own pace. Abbey walked to the center, the chestnut's eyes turned to hers, and with a kiss of her lips, he moved off in a walk. The girl's hand raised, and he moved up to a trot, another flick of her hand and he picked up a smooth, flowing canter. They worked through their paces, changing direction a few times, around and around the circle until Abbey let her hands drop, turning her back and walking away. Saint followed, which was then rewarded by a treat quickly slipped out of her pocket and into his waiting lips.
♥ Once out of the round pen, Abbey slipped into the saddle without a sound, moving gracefully and swiftly across the horse's back. Saint shook his head, she gave with her hands, and they were moving toward the trail, a thin gap between the trees leading away from the stableyard. Abbey was beginning to relax, her breathing deep as she sat in the saddle, feeling the horse move under her and the sound of the forest around her. "When I see you smile, tears run down my face I can't replace. And now that I'm strong I have figured out how this world turns cold, and it breaks through my soul and I know -" The girl's soft singing to herself, a clear, heartbreaking voice echoing through the forest was cut off as she felt someone watching her, much the same feeling as a feather being trailed down her neck. Heels pressed down, her weight in her toes, she brought Saint to a stop before whipping her head of chestnut curls around. No one behind her, so what had she heard, or rather felt? "Hello?"

The story's far from finished, WE COULD FILL IN ALL THE PAGES;
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[/blockquote] Alex stepped out of the truck and sighed. After almost a whole straight week of rain, the sun had finally decided to show itself. The light straining from behind dark clouds cast odd shadows over the ground and gave off the briskness in the air that was customary to this time of the year. But however timid the sun might be, it was a welcome sight to the seventeen year old's prominent green eyes. Back in California, warm days were almost always taken for granted, even in the fall. But not in West Virginia. But he was getting used to the new oddities. In fact, ever since moving here almost two months ago, Alex was beginning to not only expect these differences, but actually embrace them. Sure, it was a lot different than what he was used to, but Pinewood definitely had it's advantages.
He ran a hand through his dirty blonde locks then stuffed his hands casually in his jacket pockets. He moved around to the back of the truck and reached over to grab a sack. Rummaging through it, he produced a small bag of baby carrots and tossed the sack back into the cab. He might as well cozy up to Chaz if he planned on getting him out for a trail ride today. Chaz was pretty stubborn sometimes, but carrots where his weak spot. Soon Alex was striding through the stable isle towards the gelding's stall. "Hey boy, guess what I got for you?" Alex asked in a quiet voice. He was always gentler when it came to horses, his tough exterior dominated by his softer, animal loving side.
A smirk played across his lips as Chaz's ears perked, spotting the carrots and reaching his head over for them. Alex ran his hand over the gelding's sleek gray neck and smiled. "Think you're up for a trail ride today, boy?" He asked, giving his a second carrot and proceeding to scratch the horse's jaw. He stuffed the bag back into his jacket pocket and patted his neck before heading over to the tack room. After selecting the correct saddle, bridal, and reins, he went back and tacked he reluctant Chaz up, slipping his a carrot here and there to keep him standing still. "Alright, here we go" He said once he had finished, leading Chaz out of the stable and into the brisk air to mount. He slipped his foot into the stirrup and propelled himself into the saddle, readjusting himself in the seat and gingerly picking up the reins. Then they were off.
After being here only a few months, Alex was getting pretty good at all this horse riding stuff. It didn't seem like that long ago he was getting his first real lesson. His mom and dad used to take him out to his uncle's to ride their Clydsdales once in a while, but that was before the divorce. Before coming here it had been forever since he had been on a horse, and it felt good to ride again, even if he was still learning. Today would be the perfect day for a trail ride. After spending all week cooped up in his mom's apartment helping her move things, it was nice to get out and about again. He took a deep breath of the fresh cold air as he urged Chaz into a trot towards the forest.
Alex's cool blue eyes drifted over the peaceful scenery as the pair followed the well used path. Suddenly he felt Chaz stiffen beneath him and slow to a walk. Alex brought his eyes forward again. The gelding now held his head higher, his ears perked in alertness as he whiffed the air and surveyed his surroundings with more interest. "What is it, boy?" Alex held tight to the reins and sat down deep in the saddle as he looked around. Then he spotted something, another horse and rider. A girl from what it looked like. Alex moved Chaz into a walk again, trying to catch up and get a better look at the pair. They moved around a bend and Alex slowed Chaz to keep them out of sight as he strained his ears. Was she... singing? A slight smirk played across his lips as he listened.
Her clear crisp voice echoed through the chill air and Alex smiled again. Suddenly she quieted and turned around, looking quite perplexed. She must have realized someone was listening. "Hello?" Alex knew he had to show himself now. He pushed Chaz into a trot and came into the girl's line of sight. He bit his lip to hold back a smirk, feeling kind of ridiculous and some what of a creep. "Hey" he said, a sound that resembled a quiet chuckle emitting from his throat as he pulled Chaz to a stop and ran a hand through his hair. "I was just... well, I heard your singing and I um - I'm Alex. Alex Hastings. Sorry for sneaking up on you like that" He flashed a smile at her, hoping his charm would get him out of whatever trouble he might be in for spying on her.

♥ Of course, being Abbey, the scarlet-haired girl didn't have a clue she was being spied on. Not that if she knew who was doing the spying, that she'd really mind. That became apparent when he pulled out of the forest on his horse and her face broke into a smile. Turning her baby blue eyes to the ground, her cheeks warmed to a soft rose color. He was biting his lip as if he couldn't help laughing at her, and she mistook that for laughter at her singing voice. She sang to herself all the time, feeling comfortable enough to do it by herself or with her horse, but she hated sharing her voice with others. Too embarassing. "Hey." Her voice trembled, repeating back to the boy his greeting. He seemed to feel as awkward as she did.
♥ Thankfully, Abbey was recovering from her shyness and beginning to get a good look in at him. Albeit, it was over her shoulder because she was too shy and lazy to turn Saint around to face the new pair. His wavy blonde hair was falling in his face, he had the most adorable smile and these eyes that made Abbey giggle to herself. To add to all of that, he seemed nervous, stuttering through his speech. He could hear her laughter now, tinkling like a windchime through the air. Saint got tired of her imbalance in the saddle and wheeled around to face the boy and his horse. Her cheeks hadn't turned pale again. "Uhm ... That's okay, Alex." The voice coming from her lips was soft and vulnerable, barely audible from the distance between them.
♥ Her voice raising now, she spoke again, beginning to feel sure of herself again. "Was it really that bad, though? You're laughing at me." So the kid wanted to be charming, huh? Well, Abbey had some of that in her, too. She just hadn't used it in so long, two weeks out of California now and not a cute boy in sight. Alex had caught her off guard, needless to say. Her nerves were a bundle of butterflies in her stomach, a weakness in her knees she couldn't shake. More than anything she wanted to get off Saint and walk around until the strength returned to her legs, free of the jittery feeling. Yeah. She'd walk right over to Alex and kiss his full, sweet lips. ... Well, maybe that was too much for their first meeting. She just couldn't help it. He was so ... hot. Abbey giggled again to herself. What in the world would he think if he could hear her thoughts right now?
♥ And then, out of nowhere, she decided to let him have it. "I'm sorry," A hand through the hair, pushing it out of her eyes. "I just wasn't expecting to see anyone out here." Of course, it would have been fine to let it go at that, but for whatever reason, Abbey's mouth couldn't stop running. "You're kind of cute." Oh, crap. Her hand trailed up to her mouth, blushing a deeper pink and turning her eyes to the ground. What had she done? Maybe he wouldn't think it was a big deal.
