Most of you know that I'm obsessed with horse racing, and a lot of you have heard that the past four years I've called the Derby winner, starting with Giacomo, Barbaro, Curlin, and Big Brown. This year I've had rotten luck with my horse getting pulled out last minute. First there was Old Fashioned who was set to be the morning line favorite... he pulled up lame in a workout and was pulled out of the Derby. Then there was Stardom Bound, but her two year old success didn't transfer to her three year old year, so they pulled her out to give her some time off. Then there was Square Eddie, but he injured his leg and was pulled out yesterday. So now I'm in a fix, but I'm still going to post my top picks.
My top pick is Pioneer of the Nile. He has won his last four starts, and while he did have a rocky start to his career, he's shaped out to be an impressive runner in his three-year-old season.
My next pick is I Want Revenge Of IEAH Stables, which as some of you may remember is the stable Big Brown ran out of. He has a relatively good kick in the end and came from about 11 lengths off the lead in the stretch to win by a length and a half in one of his races when he was caught flat footed at the start.
My Third pick is Mine that Bird Just for the fact that he is starting in post position 8 and I've always put that number in my top three just for the heck of it.
Fourth is Friesian Fire because of his recent improvement and winning his past three starts.
And finally, I think long shot Chocolate Candy Could make a last minute bid for the roses, just because I couldn't not pick a horse with that name...it would be like not picking the best basket ball player for your team... and that would be just wrong.
So there you have it, Jess' Top five for the Kentucky Derby 135.
