- Continued from A Flawless Duo -
Kendra sat comfortably on Sidney's back. It was easier to move on a horse's back without the saddle in her opinion anyways. Many people think its a lot harder to ride without a saddle. She thought otherwise because she felt more free and she actually first learned to ride a horse without the saddle so it didn't matter to her. She smiled, and turned around. There was a new friend of hers. Grayer and her horse Rojo. They were really a mis-matched pair. Rojo was a beautiful blue roan stallion. He was a very obedient creature. Grayer was a bright red headed girl with a big personality. She had a lot of happiness in her face. She knew she would like her. She smiled, and spun around. She wondered if they could race.
Sidney would probably pull ahead by a little bit, not to be modest. Sidney had no saddle so nothing was weighing her back. "So, how long have you lived here?" she asked, attempting to create some conversation between the two of them. She breathed in deeply. It had turned into a very lovely night. The sun was just beginning its set, and it was warm out. Sidney trotted along happily all excited for a chance to be outside in nice weather. She whinned happily at the horse behind her. She liked him, then again. Sideny liked everybody because she was such a social horse. She was like a little child in a park full of kids. Kendra smiled, and gently rubbed the mare's neck. "Good girl," she muttered.

The sun settled along the hills beyond them and it was a gorgeous evening for a trail ride. Rojo pranced a little as he tried to catch up to the horse in front of him. He nickered and perked his ears forward. Grayer laughed and gently tugged on the left side. He bended obediently and tucked his head. She then dropped the reins and they were soon calmly walking along side Kendra and her mount, Sidney. She was a gorgeous horse, grayer had to admit. They suited each other to. Kendra seemed like a free spirited person, and Sidney, being a thoroughbred, was basically born free spirited. Rojo matched stride with stride with Kendra's horse. For a quarter horse, he was tall, And very well built, coming from both the quarter horse side and Paint. Grayer wished she could have just thrown off her saddle, she felt more as one when riding bareback. She liked to be close to her horse, to be as if she was the one running her heart out for the one she loved most. A large field was coming up along the trail. You could see where other horses gave the fullest. Grayer smirked, she knew that when they got there they would probably race, and Rojo always being a gentleman, would stay a bit behind, he wasn't competitive when it came to racing others. But when it came to barrel racing, he was a totally different horse.
Her deep thoughts were vanished when Kendra spoke. Grayer looked up and smiled, Not very long really. Only a few weeks now. How about you? Grayer smiled intently as she watched her new friend, her piercing blue eyes blinked occasionally and wondered off when something caught her eye. Rojo snorted and kept leaning towards Sidney, slowly making his way over. Grayer laughed and pushed her heel into his side, making him move the opposite. He snorted again but walked in a straight line. His shoes clicked here and there as they hit rocks and what not. Grayer looked back over as Kendra patted her horses neck. It was nice to see someone treat horses like Grayer. She wasn't saying everyone treated there horses badly or nothing, but she had a view of this differently. Alot different. You could tell when a horse truly loved his owner. When they would give anything in there will for them. When they would pour there heart into anything the owner asked them to do. Grayer knew her and Rojo had that kind of bond. One that No one could break. As cheesy as it sounded, it was true. She smiled and leaned back putting her arm out and touching his hind quarters. Rojo flickered and ear back, and Grayer could feel his whole body relax even more.
The trail was more than perfect and Grayer loved to be outdoors. Especially since she was new, she hadn't got a chance to explore. Grayer was a curious sort. Always getting into trouble, but always finding a way out. The birds chirped her and there, a typical story book evening.

Kendra smiled. Sidney was attempting to be the gentle and kind one. She reached out, and gentle nudged Rojo in the neck. Sidney was such a friendly. She thought she could easily make friends with anyone. Horse or human. She nickered happily as the young stallion tried to get closer to her. Sidney didn't mind, and Kendra really didn't either, but Grayer seemed she wanted to keep her space. Kendra understand. She noticed the open field in front of them. She wondered if they would try to race at all. Kendra knew Sidney would race in a hearbeat, whether it was just those two, or an actual race for money and prizes.
Sidney had the heart of a racer, and nothing would stop her. Ever. Kendra knew this, and honestly she felt like she was literally apart of the horse when she raced. Then again, she knew Sidney would only be able to race professional so many more times. Sidney was already eight years of age, and had suffered several injuries. It would only be so long before Sidney would injury herself so much that she would be able to hardly walk again. Kendra shook her head of the horrid idea, and prayed it wouldn't happen soon.
She nodded her head, and said,"About the same. Sidney's been having no problems settling in." She pet the mare in the neck gently, and Sidney whinned. She began prancing a little bit. She wanted to race. Kendra laughed. She looked over at Grayer, and smirked. "Up for a little race?" she asked. Sidney was like a bullet waiting for a trigger to be pulled. Easy girl she thought. Sidney calmed herself down a little bit at the silent comment given to her. She just wanting to spring forward.

Rojo pranced lightly as they made there way up the hill towards the field. Grayer squinted her eyes as the sun shone on her face. A small breeze lifted her stray hairs and sent them in whichever direction they pleased. She smiled as Sidney nickered and nudged Rojo. He definitely liked the 'lady' attention. She laughed. As Kendra spoke grayer let the reins rest on Rojos neck and put all her stray hairs back behind her ears. She tightened her ponytail and nodded as Kendra told her she had been here the same amount as she had. Grayer grabbed the split reins again and tightened them a little bit. The big field was within less than 20 feet away from them. Grayer didn't know if she should be the first one to pipe up about racing, but Kendra read her mind and spoke first. Up for a little race? Grayer smirked, Heck yes! Who couldn't refuse that offer! She said the last bit with a huge grin looking at Kendra. It's the 'rule' of riding: when coming to a big field you must race in it, or if alone, gallop by yourself. Grayer laughed at "the rule". It wasn't real or anything, it was just something her dad taught her.
Rojo sensed something exciting was about to happen. He jig jagged this way and that almost swinging his hind end into Sidney. Grayer pushed her heel into his side and he moved off of it swinging the other way. Sorry, he gets really hot when I get excited. She laughed and then patted his neck. The horses had been long before warmed up so a nice breeze would do them no harm. The field was less then 10 feet in front of them now, standing start? Grayer wondered. Nahhh Grayer giggled, Maybe I should give you a head start. She said it with clear sarcasm knowing that Kendra and Sidney needed no head start. Sidney was born and bred for racing. Most Thoroughbred were anyways, and with a heavy Roping saddle on, Rojo would tire quicker than usual, but he could still give a lot of umph. Grayer knew that for a while, Rojo would give Sidney a run for her money, but in the long shot, Sidney would out do him.
They were now standing in the field, Grayer gently pulled back on the reins, Whoa... she coaxed he stopped and stood there without moving, he pricked his ears and they swiveled every which way catching all the sounds that came to them. He turned his head around and nickered to Sidney, then turned back to listen to all the sounds again. Grayer laughed, You ready? Grayer looked dover at Kendra and nodded, she nudged Rojo's sides and he need no further encouragement. He pushed off with his powerful hindquarters, and a burst of speed came from him. Grayer held him back, knowing the common sense racing strategies. Grayer never told Kendra this, but she didn't ask either, but Grayer had her jockey license and cam here because of there race track. Her parents knew a few people and they wanted her to exercise and possibly race there horses. With that thought in mind she wouldn't tell Kendra unless she asked something about it along the lines. She wasn't about to just come out with it and brag about it. That wasn't Grayer, you would never guess, that for a rich kid, that she wasn't snobby, preppy, or whatever else others called "people like her."
Another reason she moved was because she wanted a new start to things. Where no one knew who she was, or what her past was like. She smiled, her thoughts were quickly brought back to the race. She could feel Rojos powerful body move under her, she lightly lifted herself out of the saddle, putting more weight on his withers than anything. She couldn't look back, she was taught never to look back unless you were checking that you way was clear, not to see where others were. That doing cost her a race about 2 years ago. She had Rojos head and wasn't letting him out, but he was still moving at a fast pace. Grayer knew Sidney would come flying by here in a second, but she didn't care, this was all about having fun. She wasn't gonna hold a grudge against her new friend for beating her in a race. Especially when Kendra's bareback and when she has a heavy saddle on. She smiled, she loved the feeling of galloping. It's like you had no care in the world. All your worries just disappear, as you and your horse soar.

Kendra had a smile. Well, it wasn't a smile it was more of a sly grin. Not many people say this within Sidney or Kendra, but there was something. A certain spark that gave Sidney her talent. In Kendra's opinion, every race horse had an aura that caused them to be there racer they are. The aura came in a ray of colors. Black being the slower racers, and white being the fastest. Sideny was a faint yellow. You didn't see many of those. Kendra smirked as Grayer agreed to her challenge.
"I don't need a head start," she muttered. She wasn't going to brag about Sidney's speed. She was almost like every other race horse. Kendra had only seen one horse that had a white light. He has a retired race horse. He had several injuries, and was exact like Sidney. Well, it was Sidney's father. Of course they were alike. She smiled and the memory of the white aura horse. Fusaichi Pegasus was her sire. But, her mother was a race horse, but wasn't as fast as Fusaichi Pegasus. She had a yellow aura, but she won races. She was nothing compared to Fusaichi Pegasus, though. This is where Sidney's faint yellow aura came from.
Kendra watched as Grayer and Rojo raced forward. Sidney wanted to pull along side them, but Kendra held her back for a couple more moments. As soon as Sidney would start running, she would be along side them in a couple moments. Kendra paid close attention to the pair. Soon enough, she noticed an orange aura coming from the horse. She grinned. He was a fast runner, she'd give them that. She kicked Sidney in the side. But not fast enough.
Sidney reared up into the air, and leaped forward. She whinned loudly, and then a choir of thundering hooves came over the meadow. Kendra quickly positioned herself on Sidney's back so she wouldn't fall off, and Sidney could really run. Her gait was perfect. Soon enough, it seemed that a bright faint yellow aura came from Sidney's hooves. Kendra watched as the pair of Grayer and Rojo came closer. She slowed Sidney down a little bit, and soon enough. They were running along side each other. Kendra breathed in deeeply. They were taking up terrain. Dirt was flying behind them. Kendra concentrated on entering Sidney's mind.
Kendra knew that Sidney was the only horse she could ever enter her mind. Soon enough, Kendra basically saw what Sidney saw. She had to remain extremely focused otherwise Sidney and Kendra would end up in big trouble. Sidney felt Kendra inside her head, and she thought Now?. "No," she whispered into the mare's ear,"Just a little bit longer."
They reached a certain point where the meadow would reach a fenced in part. She took in a deep breath. Her eyes were closed, but soon enough, her eyes opened. Sidney felt the sudden burst of energy, and her legs began moving herself quicker. Soon enough, Sidney was pulling herself ahead of Rojo and Grayer. Kendra spotted a bump in the meadow. "Shit," she muttered. She didn't want Sidney taking another hit on her front legs. She pulled up slightly, slowing the horse drastically, but as soon as they past the bump, she kicked the mare forward, and they were flying once again.

Everything went by in a blur. It seemed as if they were moving at mock 20. Grayer giggled at the thought, she exaggerated.....alot. Not enough that she lied about things but enough that people got the point. Rojo's legs pushed off faster and faster with each stride lengthening. Grayer still had his head and wasn't about to let him out anytime soon, if ever. She had is medicine boots on, as always, but still was cautious of what\\at she did. She heard a panting sound. She looked over to see Sidney's head straight out giving it her all. All of a sudden it disappeared as Kendra pulled her up. Grayer quickly looked forward and saw the reason why. She too pulled Rojo back and he slowed, as they got over it, she gave him the same head he had before. She saw Kendra kick Sidney's side and she came flying towards them.
Sidney's head started to pull ahead of Rojo, then she was ahead by half a length. Rojo fought to keep up but Grayer held him back. Hey, common' now she said to him. We can keep up with them no problem, even with me holding you back manAs if he understood Rojo's stride lengthened. She didn't even have to give him more head room and he stayed the same ground Sidney was. He soon pulled along beside her again, matching her stride for stride. grayer smiled bigger than ever. this is the life, she thought. She wanted to say it out loud but she doubted Kendra would hear. Her mind focused back on Rojo, he was fighting for his head and freedom. This was the first time he had ever tried to beat a horse while racing. weird Grayer thought again. Well theres a first time for everything. She smirked as Rojo was still matching Kendra's thoroughbred stride for stride. Quarter horses are definitely the most versatile horse there is around. Rojo is a living example. grayer still hadn't let him out, his breathing was still as if they were walking. Thundering pistons came down and brought up dirt as they pushed off again and again, repeating over and over.
A round turn came and Grayer quickly nudged his one side, and Rojo responded with a quick lead change. Good man, she whispered. His ears were flicked back to catch any sound that came from her. They stayed with Sydney a while longer, till finally she gave him room. He switched gears almost immediately and the surged forward passing Kendra and Sidney with flying colors. She leaned forward nudging his sides, and he found another gear! Rojo was pouring his heart into it. She had no time to look behind her. His breathing became a little more heavy. Grayer was super surprised to see him going this fast with such a heavy saddle. The blue roans muscles rippled under his gorgeous pelt. Her hair all of a sudden came loose, the elastic must have came out. Damn, that was my good one. Her hair whipped in all back directions. her started to water from all the wind coming towards her. A fence came into sight in the distance. She gently took back his head, bringing him down in speed. he shook his head in protest as she pulled back. She looked behind her to see where Kendra was, but was quickly brought back when Rojo bucked. It caught her off guard and she sat down quickly pulling up his head. He only bucked once, in joy if anything.
He was down to a lope now and it seemed he was just happy to be givin' his freedom. She laughed and patted his neck. It was warm but not sweating his breathing was what it should be after just coming from a long breeze, but he wasn't even winded. They slowed now to a trot, holy crap bud! I didn't know you had that in you![/i] He nickered and bobbed his head as if in agreement. He slowed to a jog then a walk. grayer put her hand under the saddle pad, yup he was definitely sweating there. I don't blame you!, She thought, Sidney is quick, it's not many thoroughbreds you see that have that much talent. She looked ahead of her seeing if they were maybe up there, they probably passed her. But for a while they matched stride for stride then Rojo pulled ahead. She thought back to the glorious feeling. If she let him out sooner with that much speed, they probably would have tied, if not won. She had not clue as to the whereabouts of Kendra and her amazing steed.
She definitely knew that she and her new friend would become close. Regardless of the age difference. She seemed really mature for her age anyways. She still didn't know her exact age but, she would ask questions later. they stopped at a walk and Grayer hopped down, running her hands over all his legs and readjusting the sport boots....

As soon as they got past the bump, everything was good. She was glad Grayer caught the bump, too. Otherwise both of their horses would have been in deep trouble. She felt Sidney begging her to allow her to release her true talent. She saw Rojo pull ahead. Kendra smirked. Just a bit longer she thought. Sidney was pushing herself to keep up with the stallion. She really wanted to pull ahead. Sidney licked her lips, and thought for a moment. It would be all right now for Sidney to reveal her true nature. Kendra breathed in deeply, as did Sidney. They were finally connected. Give it she thought. Sidney felt a sudden release of tension, and her pistons began digging into the dirt.
She reached Rojo's side, but keep his pace. It was much too slow for the mare. Kendra smirked. She would admit, though, Rojo was a real challenge. Kendra also found out that Grayer was a professional jockey. Kendra had slipped into Grayer's mind, dug around a little bit, and picked up that little fact. She wouldn't dig into her mind other then that. Sidney raced ahead of Rojo in a couple of seconds. Her aura cover the ground all around them. Kendra could see it. She was breathing like Sidney, heavily and short. She wanted Sidney to breath like her, but she knew it was near impossible.
Kendra slowly and carefully pulled herself out of Sidney's mind. Her vision was blurry, and she got this buzzing feeling all over her body. She blinked several times, and she finally had her vision back. She sat up on Sidney's back, and she began slowing down. After several strides ahead of the original finish line, Sidney was a complete stop. Kendra slid off and looked carefully at Sidney's front legs. They weren't swelling. She smiled, and getnly rubbed Sidney's shoulders.
It seemed Sidney relaxed her body so much, that it was all she wanted. "That's my girl," she whispered gently. She grabbed the reins, and gently walked over toward Grayer and Rojo. Sidney's breathing pattern had finally returned to normal. She noticed that she was checking Rojo's legs. With a quirk of an eyebrow, Kendra asked,"Everything okay?" She suddenly got really concerned. She wondered if anything was. She was very tempted to go inside his head, and feel his pain. Just to tell Grayer that he's okay.
