Dwight sat at the computer chair, finally done chatting with everyone. Hayley had agreed to come over, and he was happy. Not just because of the company, but Jacie would have strangled him if he hadn't gotten her to. That was not exaggerating. Well, maybe a little bit. He looked down at her sparkling blue eyes, and couldn't help but smile. "Superman saved the day!" he joked. He knew she would know that he meant he had gotten Hayley to come.
Jacies' eyes instantly started to dazzle. "Yeah!" she yelped. "New friends!" She jumped in Dwights arms, snuggling up in them. She molded her small, fragile body in them, warm and safe. "Thanks, Daddy." she whispered, kissing his dimpled cheek.
Dwight smiled, loving the feeling of her in his arms. "No problem, sweetheart." She smiled as she kissed his cheek, and he hugged her tighter. "Love ya." At that, she snuggled more into his arms. He got up, Rascal getting up as well from the bed that was across from the computer. He had been taking a nap. Not that he needed it. He walked right by them, loyalty easily showing. He followed them clear out to the car, until Dwight looked at him and shook his head. "Not this time, boy. We will be back really soon with friends." At that, Rascal carried himself back to the house, through his doggy door. Dwight could see him looking through the window as they drove off.
Jacie was in her car seat, humming along to the song playing. She loved music, though Dwight didn't know why. Taylor Swift was one of her favorites, and then she jumped to Rock n' Roll with Queen. She knew most of the words, too. She stopped humming suddenly, and Dwight looked at her through his rearveiw mirror. "What?" he asked her. It wasn't like her to stop in the chorus. "Daddy, why don't I have a mommy?"
Well that certainly wasn't a question he had been expecting. Where in the world had that come from. He started hedging, and drove a tad slower. They were almost to Charlie and Hayleys' house. "Why do you ask, Jacie?" When he did, her lips puckered a bit. She seemed to be regreting she brought it up.
She had. But seeing all of her preschool friends being dropped off by their moms had always made her wonder. Why hadn't her mom wanted her? Why didn't she have one? "Well, everyone gets taken to school by their mommies. Why don't I?" She asked.
Dwight knew she would ask, but at four? That was a little young. He sighed, and pulled in Hayleys' drive. "I'll tell you later, ok?"
She looked at him skeptially, making him speak again.
"I promise." He reached back and mussed her hair, and she smiled. Dwight sighed in releif. Then he smiled a real smile. "OK, you stay here, and I'll go get Hayley."
Jacie clapped happily, too excited to talk, and just nodded.
Dwight got out of his truck, went to the door, and knocked. He was really excited for this. He hadn't had some fun with just him, Jacie, and a friend in a long time. This would be fun. So he waited, wondering how the day would go.
