Get excited
Ashleigh Griffin smiled happily as she woke that morning of December 23rd.Her eyes shining in excitement as she jumped up and looked out on her cottage window,A perfect winter day it was. The air outside was chilly-maybe fifty-five degrees. The sky was a Smokey blue with out a single cloud. The grass was covered with a very light frost and it was just frigid enough to see your breath. Virgina was a lovely place to live in.
Lovely
It felt as if she was soaring today. High above the earth-looking down.It seemed like nothing could lower her high seasonal spirits or for that matter-go wrong at all. Ashleigh tugged her worn paddock boots over her socks and twisted a rubber band around her auburn hair. She grabbed a wind breaker and shivered as she stepped out-her cheeks flushing Rosy pink. She wanted to sing to the world her happiness of such a glorious day.
Once Ashleigh got into her Black Ford truck she turned up the music and unrolled her window-Smiling to herself,Wishing that her spirits would be this high always.A small silver two horse trailer with the Pine wood Logo on it was hooked and ready to go and pick up her young gelding-Count Conceit. To bring him to the show grounds,to their first show. She was not really nervous-not yet anyways. She had perfect trust in her animal and vice-versa. she knew that her horse would not let her down.He would go to the ends of the earth and back to please her.He was more than her horse. He was more than a work animal. He was her partner, her friend
The drive to Pine wood was not that tricky, nor that long.
And within a few minutes Ashleigh was safely parked in the lot of the old stable. In such a short time so many memories bound her to this place. Good memories,Bad memories. Memories that where as vivid as painting and memories that where vague.
it was early in the morning-but the stable already bustled with activity.Grooms Mucked stalls, fed horses, led them to pasture, and groomed them.Instructors got ready to teach lessons to their Pupils and horse owners caressed and talked to their horses. This was stable life.
To everyone else, today was nothing special. It was merely another day.But for Ashleigh it was far more.It was the beginning of a life-long dream. And she knew they where ready for it. It was sort of funny. They where only entered in a single event. And not much money was a stake. This was merely a local show. But Ashleigh felt like in was the National.Yet then again, was not it like this for every first timer? As she walked to wards the barn to ready count. She thought about how exciting all of this was.
When she got to the stall of her beloved horse-he poked his handsome, rusty, red roan head over the stall door.He was overjoyed to see his friend and so he showed it. Tossing his mane up and down quickly he let out a throaty whicker her her.
Ashleigh walked quickly-covering the distance between the two quickly and she threw her arms around his warm, soft neck.
The gelding patiently stood with his neck bowed so that it was easier for Ashleigh to wrap herself around him-his eyes closed contentedly.Ashleigh breathed in the light grassy scent of a healthy horse.Glad that she had such a wonderful horse as a friend.
Finally Ashleigh pulled away and unlatched the stall door.
Slipping in to bandage Counts legs.As she bent down and began to wrap his legs Count snuffled at her hair-making happy sounds.
Once she was done,Ashleigh stood and led her horse out and walked side by side down the aisle with her horse.
"Good boy"she murmured as she tied his lead to a hook in the wall and picked up a dandy brush.Running it over the horse she hummed to herself.
Once she had brushed Count to a rich healthy shine she threw a light blanket over his withers and led him out into the sunshine.
He snorted happily and obediently stepped up into the trailer as she lowered the ramp.Ash kissed his nose and closed the door.
Climbing into her truck her head buzzed excitedly
And we are off
The Grounds where very crowded when Ashleigh arrived, dozens of horses trotted around in the rings and the announcer's voice cracked to live every few moments-introducing a new rider.
It was now eight in the morning. They where just in time to collect their number and warm up.Ashleigh walked to the booth and got her pin before unloading Count. They had fourty five minutes. As Count backed out he snorted at all of the people, scents, sounds. It was all new to him and he was interested.Ashleigh tugged the rope to remind him she was there then fastened him to the trailer before scurrying off to get his tack. His tack was nothing special.Just a plain wester pleasure saddle,a wester pad and a bridle with a snaffle and no brow band. But that was all he needed
____________________________________________________
Getting ready to start
The gelding circled the small warm-up ring-stretching his legs out in a fluid trot.Curving his neck and pricking his ears.
Fifteen minutes until starting time.
The minutes seemed to stop and freeze in mid air.
Unchanging and slow.
Ashleigh was beginning to feel slight anxiousness.
She nudged him into a lope-Keeping him centered and agreeable.
The gelding was feeling her excitement. His gait turned choppy as he tried to look back at her.To comfort her.
Ashleigh patted his gleaming neck and straightened him out.
Calm,Calm
she chanted silently
Keep hold of your nerves.
Ten minutes.She could do it.
Take this a s.t.e.p at a t.i.m.e
This was it.The big moment.
Ashleigh's hands where shaking slightly-buried in the mass of red, brown mane of her horse.
Her eyes focused on the rider before her as his mount slipped and fell.Tossing his rider.
it had not occurred to Ashleigh that this sort of thing could happen. The rider frustrated-got up and brushed himself off.
Then led his mount out of the ring with a frown.
The object of the game was to ride your horse as fast as you could through a small circle with a tiny opening to go in and out of and not touch the lines even the slightest bit.Best time won. This all took months of practice, and lasted about twenty seconds. But it was great fun.The announcer's Microphone boomed to life above them.Making Count squirm a bit.
"Shh baby.its alright"
Ashleigh soothed.Even though she knew perfectly well that he was more calm than she.
"Number Twelve.Ashleigh Griffin on Count Conceit"
She took a swallow of air and shivered.
Then urged her mount to the line.
There where hundreds of people watching her.
"When you are ready"
the announcer said.
Making the crowd chuckle.Ashleigh gathered her reins and poised to gallop. Now or never.
"Go!"
She whooped and let the reins slide out from her hands as Count surged off at a gallop to wards the key-hole.
He almost left her behind.
Ashleigh righted herself and leaned into the saddle.Egging the gelding on.Wind stung her eyes and years formed.Wind whipped her pony tail and threatened to blow her hat away.
They where mere strides from the hole now.
Ashleigh checked Count-but realized he did not need it.
He was slowing on his own.
He brought himself to a lope and entered the hole with room to spare. He twisted around-almost falling sideways because he turned so suddenly. And exited. He almost clipped a hoof on the white but Ashleigh maneuvered him around just in time.Fractions on a inch from disqualification. She sighed in relief.
All of this happened so quickly. You barely saw.
And now they where speeding up-galloping home.
They crossed the line.Ashleigh slowed the gelding and laughed aloud.her cheeks where flushed and she felt dizzy.Count was breathing hard and was sweat-ed up.But Ashleigh did not care.
They had done it!
She threw her arms around the horse and hugged him tight.
Count arched his neck and nodded. As if he knew how good he was. That sent Ashleigh giggling.
She slid off of count and led him shakily back to the back side and began to cool him out.It only took about twenty minutes to do this and she immediately threy a cooler over him and tied him up.
Then she walked over to the stands and sat down to watch the rest of the show.
Had they placed?
